Gilbert Floor Removal. How To Remove a Glued Floor?

How do you get a glued-down floor off? A “glued-down” floor has been glued down to a concrete or plywood sub-floor. Vinyl tiles and sheet vinyl, and some types of hardwood and carpet require the use of an adhesive. First, remove the flooring with a floor-scraping tool.

A walk-behind power scraper is recommended; for smaller areas, a hand-held scraper with a sharp blade would do. With bathrooms, the work begins with removing the toilet. Then, remove the baseboard, the doors from their hinges, and any edging around the doorways in all rooms.

Pulling Up Glued Down Flooring

Over glued-down plywood, some tiled floors are installed. If this is the case, you’ll need to get rid of them as well as the tiles.

Using a cordless screwdriver, remove all screws from the plywood. Remove any nails that are high enough to remove with a claw hammer and diagonal pliers.

Cut any nails or glue holding the pry bar down with a 1-inch chisel driven under the edge. Pry again to loosen apart long enough to get two hands under it by pulling the bar out and reinserting it a few inches farther down the joint. Place the loose piece of plywood over the space between the joists to provide a walking surface.

Grab it with both hands, if possible, rock it up and down, and pull it loose in one piece. You can use the plywood as a platform to pry and remove consecutive pieces, sliding it along as you work until all the plywood has been removed from the floor. Using a claw hammer, remove any remaining nails from the floor or floor joists. If the nails break, remove them with diagonal pliers.
